Mutant Coneflower

This is the second year this has appeared among the purple coneflowers (aka echinacea) in my garden. Have read some accounts that it’s caused by disease. Looks like a mutation, though. Your thoughts welcomed.
Note: I’ve done absolutely NO Photoshopping on this. It’s a green coneflower, with stubby petals in a patch of purple normals.
